Text Box: Recycling Technology Good for the Environment

Text Box: The hard, cold facts on technology waste...
“According to Environment Canada, information technology (IT) and telecom products contain hazardous and toxic substances ranging from lead, mercury and berylium in computer monitors to arsenic, cadmium and lead in mobile phones.
A study commissioned by Environment Canada estimated that 81,000 tonnes of IT and telecom equipment were recycled and disposed of in 2002. Computers and monitors accounted for 70% of this total. The study projected that recycling and
disposal of IT waste would increase to 91,000 tonnes in 2010.”*
That’s a lot of hazardous waste to contend with. What do you do with all the old computers, monitors, cell phones, faxes, printers etc. kicking around the office? Well if they’re past their prime and no longer of any use to anyone there are technology waste removal and recycling options that are available out there. If you are working with us to fulfill your technology support needs we can help you determine the best route for disposing of old equipment. If you would like to research some options on your own, check out the ‘tip of the day’ for some useful links.

Text Box: TIP OF THE DAY
Text Box: There are four ‘R’s’ in being environmentally friendly:

                             Reduce
                                    Reuse
                                    Recycle
                                    Recover

We talked about recycling e-waste in our introductory story and provided some useful links on where to look for recycling or
donation opportunities. Recover is a term geared more toward industry explained by Environment Canada as the process of “recovering wastes that cannot be used for something else.” We’d like to focus on the remaining two strategies—to reduce and reuse.
You might want to think of your technical infrastructure like you do your vehicle. If you maintain your vehicle well it will be there for you when you need it and will last longer. Taking care of your technology reduces the need to upgrade and gets you more mileage out of your existing equipment.
The 4-Point Check
*1. Backups—have you checked your backup system lately? It might not be an issue now, but when it does become an issue it better be working effectively. Regularly scheduled backup checks are your insurance policy against lost data.
*2. Viruses—your system could be operating with a virus you didn't even know it had. Left unchecked that virus could do a whole lot of damage that could have been prevented had it been diagnosed earlier.
*3. Network infrastructure—poor cabling of your network could cause corruption of data and will slow the system down. Cable checks ensure good connections and minimize network communications. The net–takeaway is that you’ll be operating at the optimum speed of the system if your cabling is
maintained properly.
*4. Overall Performance—overloaded equipment due to
improper data storage and downloads can tax the system and ultimately crash it. Regular checks can avoid costly downtime or even loss of equipment in some cases.

Text Box: Floral Mix-Up
A new business was
opening and one of the owner's friends wanted to send flowers for the occasion. They arrived at the new business site and the owner read the card; it said "Rest in Peace".

The owner was angry and called the florist to complain. After he had told the florist of the obvious mistake and how angry he was, the florist said. "Sir, I'm really sorry for the mistake, but rather than getting angry you should imagine this:

somewhere there is a funeral taking place today, and they have flowers with a note saying, "Congratulations on your new location".
